New Canon 5d4 - image numbering question

Hello!

I recently picked up a new Canon 5d4, had my first opportunity to go out and shoot with it today, and downloaded the pics into lightroom.

I noticed that the image files 'image number' portion was in the 79## range. That made me wonder...huh? should a new camera start at 0001? I am using CF cards from my 7D2..which I formatted in my 5D4 before using it. In the 5D4 the numbering is set to 'continuous'. The last pic I took with my 7d2 is directly in line with the image numbering on the new camera...ie: I left off at 7966, the first image on my new camera is 7967. At first I wondered if i had received a previously enjoyed camera (it was purchased from Henry's camera in Canada - and was shipped from their warehouse - the box and camera and all the things all appear brand new, smell new, etc). But it appears that the numbering sequence is simply continuing somehow from my other camera. which is cool i guess.

When set to continuous numbering all Canon DSLRs will carry on in sequence from the next highest number when used with a card from another camera. So if the cameras internal register is higher then it will carry on from that number, if the card is higher then it uses the number from the card. This even happens if you format the card in another camera first, and then put it in your camera.

As far as I know if you swap cards between cameras, with continuous numbering enabled the only way to stop the number from the other camera getting transfered is to format it in a computer to remove that info from it. You would then want to format in camera too just to be safe.

There is no relation at all between the file number and shutter actuations. Reset your camera to IMG0002.cr2 (or any other number)? Take a photo. Use computer to rename photo on card to IMG0001.cr2. Insert card. Next photo is IMG0002.cr2.
