Shaun I've been to Chengdu and Beijing and had no issues with my camera and taking pics of anything I want. There might be places where photography is not allowed, but I never saw an indication of that. Still, I would be careful about photographing military people or things unless they are in tourist locations - whether you are in China or anywhere else. I know know my bag weighs 31lbs with above mentioned gear and laptop. Personally I would not pack around 31lbs of equipment if your trip is not a dedicated photography trip. I used to travel a lot for my work and all I took for my gear is a Fuji X100. Last thing you want to do if you have a couple hours one day is to lug a huge load around.
