I am headed to China tonight for work, 1 week there. I am curious is anyone has experience with bringing a camera and what is generally acceptable to take pictures of, if there is anything that is frowned upon or can get me in trouble.

Any input welcome.

I will mostly be in Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Should I be concerned carrying my 5d mkiii along with several lenses:
Canon 70-200 2.8 V2
Tamron 24-70 G2
Sigma 35mm 1.8 Art

Thanks in advance.

Shaun

I've been to Chengdu and Beijing and had no issues with my camera and taking pics of anything I want. There might be places where photography is not allowed, but I never saw an indication of that. Still, I would be careful about photographing military people or things unless they are in tourist locations - whether you are in China or anywhere else.

Re gear, I took a lightweight Rebel and kit lens. :)

Spent a week in Shanghai and took pics of most everything...never had anyone even glance at me oddly.

Thanks again everyone.

While I am there on business with a very pack schedule, I will absolutely try yo break away for some shooting.

I know know my bag weighs 31lbs with above mentioned gear and laptop.

I agree with the statements above, I've been to BeiJing and ShangHai with no issues. Apparently, one can visit Chairman Mao' s tomb and supposedly no pictures there (my Chinese colleagues told me that, so third hand information).

Personally I would not pack around 31lbs of equipment if your trip is not a dedicated photography trip. I used to travel a lot for my work and all I took for my gear is a Fuji X100. Last thing you want to do if you have a couple hours one day is to lug a huge load around.

I live in Hong Kong now. No issues at all. I do lots of street photography. Lots of people go up to China on photo trips. No one has ever reported issues on the mainland either.

I suggest not using camera in the temples, some consider that as disrespect to the Buddha.
