I am a wedding photographer and I primarily use a 35mm and 85mm for about 90% of my work however I always have a 50mm in the bag just in case I need a backup lens or occasionally want to change things up a bit.

I've been considering getting the Canon 50mm f1.4 but I'm not sure of the quality of it. For those that have used it, is it a decent lens to have in the bag as a backup? Or, is it just a 1.4 version of the horrendous quality you get from the f1.8 version?

Any details of real life experience of this lens would be very much appreciated.

It's a polarising lens. I'm on the 'hate it' side. I tried 3, all garbage. Eventually I got a Sigma 50 1.4 EX and it's fantastic.
There's plenty of great photos posted on POTN by the Canon 50 1.4, there are clearly good ones, I just gave up trying to find one.

I don't think the 50 1.8 is horrendous. The old 50 1.8 II has poor build, a tiny focus ring, noisy inconsistent focus and I'm no fan of it's out of focus blur. It can produce very nice results though.

If you get a 50 1.4 Canon best to get a hood and leave it on. The focus mechanism is weak and easily damaged, a hood protects it.

You could always get the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART, and call it a day.

Or the Tamron 45 VC which is cheaper if he is primarily looking for back up to the 35 & 85.

I like my Canon 50/1.4 for the most part but I am not a wedding photog. I would want some thing a little better if I was making a business out of it though.
