So tonight I brought in my 40d with the 24-105 f/4L to take off my hand strap and put on my 80d that i just got a grip for. I took the lens off and put on my 80d and noticed that I could not zoom out to the widest part of 24mm, it would stop at roughly 40mm. It will zoom all the way out to 105 but its not smooth. The lens works fine from where it will stop at around 40mm all the way to 105mm, focus is or atleast appears to be fine. There is also a noticeable burnt smell coming from the lens as well.

I've been using the 18-135 is kit lens with the 80d as my goto lens since i got the camera so i can send this out to be cleaned/fixed if its worth it.
Here are two pics of the lens showing where it will not zoom out past.

I've had a similar issue with my EF 16-35 mm f/2.8L II USM. It turned out that a screw or two had become loose, and were blocking the movement of the ring. Removing the rubber grip on the ring allowed access to the screws, so I could tighten them. Has worked perfectly ever since.
It could very well be the same thing for you.

I just removed the rubber ring for the zoom, no screws just some kapton tape covering some brass looking thing.

In my case the screw blocking the movement was actually under the focusing ring, and only visible when the ring was in a certain position. There was an access hole that lined up with the screw only in one position.
But your problem may of course be a different one.

i found that hole you are talking about and checked the 4 screws, 2 were barely loose but nothing changed. The burnt smell is worrisome too.

I have worked with electronics all of my life......I know the smell you are talking about. Something has burned because a device has failed, drawn too much current and damaged components upstream. And, somehow done enough damage that it has been effected mechanically.

If that were my lens it would be a very simple decision.

If you send it to Canon, you know it's going to cost at least 3 or 4 hundred bucks, probably more. There are good used ones out there for not a lot more. I would just replace it.

This lens has a known issue with a specific cable failure.

I think the failure is tied to the zoom ring and wear and tear on the cable. It might be that the cable arced at the wear point rather than just failing. Just a guess.

As said above, the cost of this lens used has dropped quite a bit since the introduction of its replacement. Tough call to spend a large chunk of money on a lens like that. That said, won't Canon look things over and provide a price to fix at no cost? Might be worth the cost of shipping if you're curious. If you like to tinker maybe you get it diagnosed and try to fix it yourself?

Yes, the smell adds a different twist to the issue. My EF 24-105 mm f/4L IS USM started acting more and more unreliable in 2016. Now it doesn't work at all. I replaced it with a new EF 24-105 mm f/4L IS II USM. I wouldn't have upgraded hadn't the old one failed, but I'm not too inclined towards repairing an almost ten years old lens, when a replacement has been launched.

Well i don't have the spare cash for a replacement with a newer model. I'm going to look to see if that Canon repair center is still in Central NJ. If so i'l talk with them.

The lens still works too, just can't zoom in past 34mm. It's basically now a 34mm-105 f/4l is lol
