I live overseas and would like document a bit of my life here as my parents will probably never have the chance to visit me. So what i want to do is do some video work with my dslr. Mainly walking around the city and countryside documenting where I have lived and the varied people groups and culture. I would like to at times video myself while I am walking and describing things about my life. My concerns are mainly two fold
1. How usable is a stabilizer with a dslr
2. Is it reasonable to think that i can use this setup to video myself with an outstretched hand camera facing me (obviously it wouldnt be extended periods)

Im not against spending money to buy quality as that generally saves you more in the long run, however that doesnt mean that i want to frivolously spend money because I can. I will will most likely pair my 6d with the 40mm pancake lens to keep things reasonably light. I have a tascom d60 and a lavalier mic that I will use for audio.

Hopefully some people with hands on experience can chime in and help recommend a stabilizer.

1) Just takes some practice to get the pacing right on talking, walking, and framing at the same time. You just have to make sure your stabilizer is sized correctly for the weight especially if you're going for active stabilized.

2) The 40mm would be pretty tight at out-stretched hand distance even on full frame. That is assuming you can keep holding a rig with all of the accessories for audio on it for a decent amount of time.

The audio will be attached to me separately and synced post
I was hoping the 40 would give a wide enough view. I dont want to use the 24-70 mainly for the fact that it would get heavy

Well, for a 40mm lens on full frame.... assuming a working distance from camera to yourself (arms length) of 2.5 ft... the calculator spits out...

2-2.25 ft of horizontal view
~1.5 ft of vertical view

Which means you could a head & shoulders view of yourself....

Here's the calculator:
