Today the B-21 Raider will be unveiled. Sure would be nice to get photos of this bad boy!

I wonder what makes this an entirely new aircraft and more than just a B-2B. And what happened the B-3 thru the B-20?

Size- It's a little bit smaller. The B-2 wingspan is 172 feet while the B-21 is 164 feet, so the new plane can fit in more hangars. The length of a B-21 is a little smaller, too. Changes in engines, and a bunch of other stuff the military wants kept secret.

I'm guessing the name is a bit of wordplay (number play?) since the B-21 looks a lot like a B-1

Fit more hangers Jack? thought that the idea was to get everything internal to clean up the outside and make it more stealthy. That external munitions gave it a bigger radar image?

My ambition for a good while is to grow old disgracefully. So far my wife tells me that I am doing really well!

I'm sorry, I meant fit into more hangars. Besides, the word you used is hanger.

A hangar is a garage for aircraft (and the word I actually used).

I read that the word raider is in honor of the Doolittle raid on Japan during WWII.

I thought the same thing when I first saw the pics. It looks like a B-2 with smaller air intakes and bigger windows. Although I suppose, with our current technology, there's only so much they can change the airframe from the B-2 and still be stealthy. My guess is most of the advances are refinements and electronics.

I'm pretty sure there were B-3, B-6, B-10, B-17, and B-18 at various times during the 20th Century. There were also a few "XB" experimental numbers in there that never made it to active service.

The article I saw said it was being called B-21 because it's the first new bomber of the 21st Century.
