Hi John. I did write '80 years ago tonight' and I did make the post on the 16th May which was the actual date that they took off. :p

I stand, sit and lie down corrected mate. I never was any good at maths though

80 years ago tonight 19 especially adapted Lancasters of the newly formed 617 Squadron set off to attack the dams in Germany’s Ruhr Valley. Using a newly developed Bouncing Bomb invented by Barnes Wallis the plan was to attack three of the dams in the Ruhr Valley to disrupt production of steel and other services. The first wave set off from RAF Scampton at 21:28. Two of the three targeted dams, the Mohne and the Eder were breached.

53 of the 133 aircrew who took part were killed.

The mission, code named Operation Chastise was a considered a great success with production not returning to normal levels until September 1943.

This incredible feat by the crews of 617 Squadron was achieved with a level of skill and accuracy that was unheard of for the time.

I was lucky enough to have met Bomb Aimer Johnny Johnson who made his pilot go around nine times before he was content to release his bomb.

I will be raising a glass tonight in memory of these brave young men and all the crews of Bomber Command who never really achieved the level of recognition they deserved.

I also appreciate the background story. I have never seen this aircraft in the U.S. Time for me to take a trip to the UK.

Beautiful photos Mark
I remember seeing the movie. Always have mixed feelings about 'reproductions'
Other night they showed scale models of the landscape that are on display at our war memorial in Canberra.
Amazingly detailed and apparently accurate

Thanks Richard, that's very interesting.

I belong to a club in Henley on Thames and the Clubhouse is the building where the models were made. The reconnaissance aircraft took off from RAF Benson just up the road and then the aerial photographs, some taken by MkXI Spitfires like the one below, were returned to RAF Medmenham https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_Medmenham (external link) just down the river a little bit where they were analysed and if necessary the models were made at Phyllis Court. On the 17th May I attended an excellent talk on the Dambusters Raid in the very room that the models were made. https://www.phylliscourt.co.uk/ (external link)

We are very lucky to have so much aviation history in this area.

beautiful Spitfire
That's very interesting Mark and what a privilege
It would be rather awe inspiring to attend that in that authentic setting.

At first glance a poor shot but I took it to show how much the smoke in air is affecting us. It has made it impossible for me to do solar imaging.

Taken with a rental RF 100-500.
