With the up coming Veterans day I thought I would pull out some old film images from the 80's and 90's.

This is C-130E, 63-7793 that we flew to AMARG (The Bone Yard) in the early 90's for retirement. When we landed they handed us markers and we all signed her before saying goodbye.
A couple of years later I was TDY to Davis Monthan AFB in Tucson, AZ. and took a tour of the bone yard and low and behold we drove past her looking the same way we left her. My name was even still on her just forward of the crew door.

She has since been scarped and made into who knows what..

Happy Veterans day to all who servered..

Great series of images, DM!
Are these consoles for control of this C-130's side cannons, or are they 'drone pilot' workstations?

Thanks Doug.

I don't know. There was only one crewmember at the cargo door and when I asked him what this variant was used for he only said ,"rescue". There was another crewmember in cockpit who was talkative but there was a line to get into the cockpit and I didn't want to chew up his time/hold up the line so I didn't ask any questions.

In contrast, there was also a EC-130H Compass Call on static display and open for walk-throughs which surprised me given its mission. I went up to the rear cargo door, was going to take a picture of the inside and one of three personnel standing there said, "no photography". I wasn't surprised. There were three AF personnel at the front door plus two FBI agents with sidearms (which may have been just a coincidence.) One of the AF crew gave us a briefing before going in the front door and said ,"no photography inside the aircraft". He looked in his twenties and told us he spoke Arabic and the aircraft was used to "monitor communications". Once inside we could look at everything but it was so dark you couldn't read any of the labels on the missions equipment stations. I talked to a crewman standing at one of the stations (no doubt monitoring the people touring the A/C). He told that the he "spoke Spanish and guy at the front monitors the ground communications and then tells the mission crew members to jam the communications if they (the people they're listening to) start talking about certain things." I asked him a few question which he pleasantly declined to answer. He did tell me the EC-130H is due to be replaced by G550s in 2025.

The only shot I got of the EC-130H. Note the cargo door is now closed:

Nice seeing a Compass Call bird here. I was on them while stationed at Sembach AB, Germany back in the late 80's. 73-1585 had my name on it for a couple of years.

These were taken while TDY to Aviano AB, Italy in 1989.

I used to live there in the early 70's, my neighbor was a F4 pilot and second in command at the base. I always wanted to be a pilot but I am blind in one eye and have some other problems that made it impossible.

My plane had a forward window crack inflight and had to make an emergency landing at Ramstien AB just down the road. We arrived to replace the window and crew had locked the aircraft before heading back to Sembach and it was being watched 4 SPs. During the replacement the head SP officer showed up at the aircraft and while on my way down from the flight deck he was just stepping on the crew door to enter the plane. I stopped him and was told he was so and so at the base and he wanted to see what they were guarding. I blocked his way and asked him to leave my plane which did not make him happy having a SSgt tell a Lt. Col. what to do. I told him that he did not have clearance to enter and why did he think he was guarding it.

That was fun...

No. That was the B-17 with a Fulton Skyhook. The movie was Thunderball. ;)

Nice,

It's a Republic F-105 Thunderchief, I think either a G or F version. affectionately called a "Thud"

Great looking aircraft, sadly long out of service before I became interested in aircraft, not actually sure I've even seen one in the "metal" so to speak.
