Looks like the Flugausstellung museum in Hermeskeil which is on my "if in the area" list as they have quite a wide selection of exhibits.

Extreme rear right looks like a Canberra Bi7? Like this one I photographed last Sunday up on Selsley Common just outside Stroud, Wiltshire

Sorry, it was a bit of a long way off and I only had my phone with me

THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW. Please log in to see the good quality stuff.

It's got about a 4' wing span and is a PSS glider slope soarer. It looks fantastic in the air. I worked on the PR7 version for a while when I was stationed in Singapore. They are/were lovely aircraft to work on as a lekky.

Oh yes, that's the River Severn in the background and Wales the other side

My ambition for a good while is to grow old disgracefully. So far my wife tells me that I am doing really well!

Yep looks like it, they list the Thud as an F-105F 62-4416 - Ha! 1962 a great year - when I was born!

Definitely looks like a B-57 Canberra, I was under the impression that they weren’t flying those anymore.

This is a WB-57F Long Wing, it was based off the B-57 Canberra. There were only 21 WB-57’s made and of these, only three are still flying today with NASA.

Nice,

It's a Republic F-105 Thunderchief, I think either a G or F version. affectionately called a "Thud"

Great looking aircraft, sadly long out of service before I became interested in aircraft, not actually sure I've even seen one in the "metal" so to speak.

Kev

Thanks for the info

B-57. They were made under licence from English Electric if I remember correctly. The last Canberras in R.A.F. service were the PR9s until 2006 when they were finally retired.

Not a bad service record, 1951 to 2006. The photo of mine, as I said, it is a scale model. No power, just a glider and it flies really well to. The bloke who built it is ex R.A.F. and now, like me loves flying RC gliders

And these

About the only I hated on the PR7s was when I had to check and wire up the explosive bolts that held the canopy above the driver and the ejection hatch above the 2 crew just behind him. The plumbers (armaments blokes) used to fit them and also frighten the life out of me by saying that if you hald the charges in your closed fist they would explode!

For those who don't know, an explosive bolt is a hollow bolt with an explosive charge in it and when the thing goes bang it breaks the bolt. Used on things like the canopy and hatch so that it the crew had to use their Martin Baker ejection seats they would have a big clear hole to get out through. Thinking about it, I never like their seats either!

SR-71 Taxing out to take off at RAF Mildenhall, England. Taken Apr 1986 from the cargo compartment of my C-130 so no one would see me taking them.

Nice, an amazing aircraft.

Why did you feel you had to sneak the photos? The SR-71 was displayed on both static and in flight at some UK airshows by then - plenty of photos and videos taken by Joe Public.

It’s probably because, while in the military we are constantly being told not to take pictures of certain things which in this case would include the SR-71.

About eighteen years ago, I was stopped by Military Police when I was gonna take some pictures of aircraft taking off while standing on the ramp. This is on an airfield that is shared with both military and civilian aviation and by this time I had been out of the military for about seventeen years.

Civilians are always coming to the fence taking pictures, this time the MP was just harassing me, he said I couldn’t be there taking pictures even though I do it all the time, I asked him what the difference was whether I was on the ramp or on the other side of the fence fifty feet behind me, he said that he had the power to arrest me on the ramp but couldn’t touch me on the other side of the fence. Things got heated between us because I was standing on a civilian ramp and I informed him that his jurisdiction stopped at the red line he had crossed a hundred and fifty yards away. There’s a bit more to this story but I’ll save it.

Had he approached me differently and asked that I take precautions to not take pictures in the direction of the military side, I would have gladly accommodated his request.
