A male blue mason bee Osmia caerulescens (the females are dark blue).
5Dmk2/MPE-65/430Ex flash. hand held. Focus stacks using zerene.

They might be a bit easier earlier in the day but normally they are not about when it's coolish. With the above bees it's a case of knowing their habits. The male will circle around it's patch in about 5 mins with several stopping places. So I just wait at one of the stopping places and after a few tries, the bee gets used to my presence and is a bit more approachable,
Best trick though is with miner bees especially the males which only fly when it's sunny on coolish days, so if the sun goes behind a cloud, the bees can't fly and are very approachable.
