Morning,

Im just after a few tips or advice, changes to camera settings ect ect,

I am currently using a pair of 5D's, I mainly shoot landscapes, few portraits and architecture and just got a mighty good deal on the 100-400mm II lens, its one insanely good lens, I have been out to a local water park with it,
and this has convinced me id like to try my hand at wildlife/nature photography a bit more, So im just after general tips, changes to camera settings, metering, servo ect ect, anything that I would
benefit from changing, any advice would be appreciated, I am looking at replacing the mkII 5D with a 7D mkII soon.

many thanks.

I use that lens to shoot wildlife on a 6D. I shoot a lot of birds in flight, center point focus, manual or TV, center weighted or spot metering and AI Servo. ISO I just set to where I can maintain a high SS of 1250 to 1600.

I'm not familiar with the 5D II so other than the way I shoot I really can't speak to your specifics. It's my understanding that the 7D II is very good for this type of shooting.

Lots of practice.

Thanks for taking time to reply, ive been having a play with the camera, definitly think the 7D is better suited but the 5D doesnt do a bad job, this is from my first attempts of the swans today, no shapening, the 100-400mm II lens is crazy sharp at f5.6 - 8, im pleased with my effort so far, thanks again ;-)a

Your swan shot is representative of what kind of sharpness you get with a full-frame camera with the 100-400vII lens on it.

I have a 5DmkII and the 100-400vII lens and it is CRAZY sharp! It is VERY clunky though, it will not be suitable for birds in flight later on if you decided to try that. Recently I tried some tests involving all of my cameras with all of my long lenses and this combination beat out everything after I calibrated each lens to each camera.
I literally do not like my 5DmkII at all, except this made me realize what a good full-frame camera can be capable of. I wish I had a 5DmkIV, but I have too many cameras and I can't afford them. (meaning, my wife!)
Also, I have the 7DmkII and I love it, combined with the 100-400vII lens you won't regret that at all. I have the 1DmkIV camera too, it does good with this lens but I prefer the 7DmkII, I prefer the 7DmkII over all of the cameras that I have, it's what I think that the 1DmkIV should have been. :) (Technology, etc)

The 5D mkII still surprises me how good it actually is, and it was a lot of fun this morning, handheld, the 5D and 100-400 were heavy but I had fun, thats the main thing, definitly thinking about a 7D mkII now though.

5DII is a bit clunky when compared to Canon's latest, but other than it's abilities in action shooting, it is a great camera with wonderful IQ. For wildlife, the 5D2 will be very good for anything not requiring the fastest auto focus, and even there, it will work, you just will have fewer keepers.

7D2 once mastered it's AF will bring your action related keepers way up.
