Been asked to shoot a member guest golf tournament in a few weeks and just thought I'd throw this thread out for some ideas and see if anyone has done this before.

Also be interested in ideas for static shots as well as some sort video as well.

Planning to edit and put together a little slide show for the member guest dinner the third day of the event.

Any problems or pitfalls anyone can see. I shoot with a 6D and 70D, numerous lenses, (probably use my 70-200, F4 to stay as inconspicuous as possible) have a spare batteries, monopod, tripod, apple laptop for the slide show, etc. Also have a friend with a Nikon that is helping out.

Thanks in advance for any and all ideas.

The first thing to do is be very clear on what they want. Generally they want a posed shot of each group as they pass by a certain tee. That usually means little time for action shots.

Get a clear understanding of the sort of shots they want. No point getting a few super action shots if what they actually want is shots of the local big wigs attending.

If they do want some action shots make sure to walk the course and find a good shooting location. Also, if there are sponsors, make sure to get some shots that include their logos/banners if possible (example UBS HK Open (external link)).

I assume you play, so you know when you can shoot and when you can't, when you can cross/walk onto the course and when you can't. As for lens choice I would use your 100-400 if shooting action and the 24-105 with flash for the presentation stuff. Oh and shutter to quiet mode... I got roasted (by association) by a caddie at the Hong Kong Open because the idiot crouched next to me fired of a burst of, what sounded like, machine gun fire; just as a player was putting. :-(

Unless it is a shotgun start, sitting near the first tee as the groups get underway would be your best option. Keep in mind that over the course of however many hours, the sun will move a lot. To be consistent, under the shade of a tree might be the best option even if the background changes.

Otherwise, as mentioned, knowing who the important people are is key to getting other shots, whether on the course or in the clubhouse. They should be able to provide a list of tee times and the organizer can highlight the heavy hitters. Try to remember who's who best you can.

Shoot a 400 get shots of tee-off, shots from ABOVE the greens looking down, be sure to capture people interacting and smiling.

Thanks for all the good comments so far, it is a member guest and my son is a member and lives just off the No.4 green, so no real big wigs or anything like a corporate golf outing. I'm doing this as payback favor to the head pro who has cut me some slack on the $120 green fees when I wasn't playing with my son. I shot a junior clinic there last and got a lot of nice compliments. I really like the idea of the silent shutter mode and frankly hadn't thought of that before. I'm doing this over the course of a couple days and all the events are shotgun starts with something like a total of 54 groups so doubtful if I will capture everyone. I know I will get a bunch of good shots and am now wondering what might be the best way to do a slide show for their formal dinner. Thought about carting my laptop but am leaning towards burning a dvd or putting everything on a flash drive. Tomorrow I am going to go check out their A/V set up and see what will work best. Again, thanks for all the comments and suggestions and feel free to keep them coming.

Just a couple of action shots that I think turned out pretty decent.
