I don't even have Windows Media Player on my Win 7 Pro machine. When I attempt to open it, I'm prompted do I want to install it. In light of your issues I chose not too, but it makes me wonder if it could be uninstalled. It actually is a part of Windows 7 and https://www.lifewire.com …s-media-player-12-2438891 (external link) has the steps to first disable and then reenable it which sometimes helps erratic behavior.

But give this a try, it is for Vista but similar steps are likely with Win 7.

1. Start Windows Media Player P 11 with your device attached.

2. Click the down arrow at the bottom of the Sync button.

3. Choose "Stop sync to device..." if there is a sync attempt in progress.

4. From the same drop-down menu, choose the device, then select "Setup sync..." in the sub-menu

5. Uncheck the box that says "Sync this device automatically"

That will disable the auto-sync and set it to manual. You could also try the option "End sync partnership" if it exists.

My computer is a custom build and the Media Player program is installed on it but, I don't think I've ever opened it to use it.

Based on the link you provided, it looks like a simple process to disable it.

At least I now know one thing to look for under Processes in Task Manager that may be a cause of safe removal issues.

Thank you for your help.

P.S. Below is what I get when I click on the WMP icon.
