Unable to find anything conclusive through official Canon or other
channels, so asking here:

Does anyone know of a reliable 'reset' mode for such printers?

It used to be that I could go to Canon's, HP's, Compaq's, Dell's etc.
website(s) for simple instructions on resets and other service modes,
specifically relating to printers, but Canon seems to have revoked
such capacity for mere mortals.

Google turns up nothing conclusive so far.
Something niggling in my mind :

I'd like to effect a factory reset on the printer, to allow ink cartridges
of genuine Canon OEM source, reset with a resetter from Precision Colors,
to allow the cartridges they supplied, to work with my printer.
I've had a couple sets of aftermarket carts fail on me in a relatively short time.
The carts supplied by PC appear to be OEM "genuine."

Should I go back to Precision Colors about this?
Should I spend another $85 or so for "genuine" OEM prepackaged carts
for compatibility? Should I give up on this printer(which is good when it works)?

To be sure, this is frustrating the crap out of me. vmad

Update:

Grabbed a replacement printhead from a Chinese eBay seller.
Cost was $24 US. Printhead and carts work, but only black.
This head was only guaranteed for black print; colors "May not
print correctly."
Soaking & flushing in water brings the colors out, but only when
daubed with a damp rag on the print output nozzles.
Functionality appears normal according to the printer's display
and mechanicals. The original printhead did indeed go bad, while the
mainboard(s) seem to have survived. :-)

Only the OEM carts from Precision Inks have been used.

Considering all, $24 is a much lesser price to pay than a service
center diagnostic checkup, and has confirmed that I don't have
a deeper problem with a mainboard.

The printhead is soaking in alcohol now in an effort to clear the nozzles.
If that doesn't produce reults, I may try a carefully-applied bit of naptha
to the ink routes. Any updates will be posted here if there is any change.

You can find a lot of advice on printhead cleaning here:

Thank you for the link post. bw!
I've spent lots of time poring over that forum, and it's chock-full of some
very useful information.

Unfortunately, the used printhead does not move anything other than pigment black
to the paper, no matter the fact that liquid can be witnessed as travelling through
all 5 ink channels, both directions. C/M/Y has appeared briefly, in the tiniest of dabs, but that's it.
This has prompted me to put this printer on hiatus until such time as I can justify
to myself and the wife that new a printhead is warranted. Too much of the unknown
and 'what-ifs' have occurred so far.

All is not lost, however. ;-)a
In reading through the multitude of discussions at the above-linked site,
I and the wife have agreed that a PRO-100 printer comes next, before futzing
around more with the current MG5320. The latter has a good scanner and so can function
nicely as a copier at minimum, so it stays for now, while accommodation for the 100
will have to be met to put it somewhere. Current rebate makes it a more sensible
expense at the current time.
