I've owned the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens now for a bunch of years. I use it to take photos of my daughter while competitive horse back riding and my son while performing int theater. I also use it for general pics while on vacation in the mountains. Since buying it, I've always had this feeling that I should have bought the 70-200 instead. I'm in a position financially where I can afford to spend 2K on this lens now but I'm not sure if I should anymore. I'm heading to Utah in a month and it got me thinking about lenses once again. Do you guys think I'll use it much in spite of having the 100-400? I'm guessing I'm going to love the faster lens of the 70-200 while shooting my son doing theater and it may be a better lens for shooting my daughter riding horses and jumping.

Also, I'm shooting a 6D that I bought new in 2012. Would I be better off (instead of buying the new lens) buying a 5D Mark IV instead? I can't afford both but I can afford either one.

Any advice?

Be aware that Canon yesterday announced some new models of the 70-200mm that will be available shortly. That means the older models may drop in price.

See https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?p=18626880 for the details.

Canon didn’t announce anything yesterday. A rumors site has said they’re confident they’re coming. Big difference.

More to the original question, to the OP: Do you feel you’re limited by the f/4.5-5.6 aperture when shooting your son or daughter? If you feel you need more light, then the 1-2 stop advantage of the 2.8 might be worthwhile. Only you can know for sure.

I have an orange cat and a brown cat. In HSL, they're both orange.

I think I'd go for the new camera body - the high ISO capabilities of the newer generation cameras is nothing short of amazing. I bought a 1Dx last year after using an older 1DsMkII and the quality of shots taken at ISO 4000 and up is unreal.

After further consideration and research I think I'm going to buy the 1D X Mark ii. From everything I've read, it looks pretty amazing. I'll have to wait on any new lenses...

I have the 5d Mark IV and I love it. With that said it all depends how much action shooting you plan on doing. For the price of a 1dx mark II you could be able to pull of the 70-200 plus the 5D Mark IV. On BH Photo its 3,099.00 right now and INCLUDES a battery grip. Another 1700K for the 70-200 mark II or 2099 for a preorder for the 70-200 mark iii and you are STILL less then 1dx Mark II.
