I recently purchased an Opteka railless follow focus. I immediately returned it because it was defective (The dial just spun without turning the focusing gear when turned in one direction).
I'm reluctant to order the same item again (Amazon didn't offer the choice of an exchange that I saw) for fear of the same issue. Plus the mount is somewhat iffy for my purposes.
Does anyone have a reasonable DIY alternative?
I've already got a DIY lever follow focus. It's much better than trying to use the focus ring on the Opteka 500mm f6.3, but it's still tough to use, much tougher than a geared knob mechanism would be.
I've seen a few, but they either seem impractical (guitar tuner) or hard to source (Lego, etc. parts).
I just ordered a couple of big bags of gears and axles from Amazon to see if I can come up with something.
Does anyone have any ideas?
