A HALD image is a 2 dimensional representation of a LUT (look up table) - it is a grid of color patches that are a reference. You can apply color edits to the HALD image and it "captures" the transformations. You can then use the transformed HALD image to apply those edits to other images.

There are a few programs like 3DLUT Creator, Affinity Photo, Raw Therapee etc., that accept a HALD image as a LUT to apply a color transform.

In the context of the online film emulator, you would load the reference (unmodified) HALD and then apply a film emulation. Save that modified HALD and you can use it as a LUT to apply to other images. Photoshop does not accept HALDs as LUTs, but there are online converters that will accept the HALD and permit you to save it as a LUT (.cube, .3dl, etc.) for use in Photoshop.

The HALD images are usually untagged so you can assign them a particular color space that matches your working color space. Most LUTs are not color-space aware, so you need to know in what color space they are meant to be applied and make sure your image is in that space.
