Anyone have any recommendations for a super sturdy monopod that can hold a slr + the weight of a 24-70 or 16-35 up fully extended upwards and at a 45 degree angle so i can shoot down on my subject from up high?

Honestly Any monopod can handle that. Start with manfrotto and then compare from there.

i would definitely not say "any" monopod. When tilted down at an angle (would like to shoot max 45 degrees tilted), some of the carbon fiber ones start bending and or wobbling and although they dont break, they dont instill any confidence in me. Revised my post and added that tidbit to it for further clarification.

I use my Gitzo GM2541 for lighter stuff but Gitzo mono pods are not cheap unless you do some research or buy used.

Sirui make some nice mono pods, I have their P424 which is great for the largest heaviest lenses so overkill for your needs! Still a bit of overkill but have a look at their P324 model - it is not too heavy and allows plenty of scope for future gear. P.S. it makes a great walking/balance pole for clambering over rocks etc.

For almost ten years now my go to Monopods were the Manfrotto 681B. Aluminum shaft with Lever Locks. Still working after all of these years. As I left the second monopod at our other location home three hours away, that was the excuse I needed to treat my self to a Carbon Fibre Monopod. So yesterday at our local shop they had the Induro CLM 304 L Monopod. Same height and stability as my old trusty Manfrotto's and less weight as well. Will use it for an all day Golf Outing on Wednesday.

I would certainly recommend the Manfrotto or Carbon Fibre if budget allows.

monopod - Gitzo CF GM5561T
head - for the lenses you mention - RRS MH-01 ball head with B2 AS II lever clamp

for 100-400, 28-300 & larger, lose the head and directly attach a 90 degree, double slotted bracket (not very expensive) with the Wimberley Sidekick in the vertical slot. if you can handle the weight, this combo can handle the lens.

the Manfrotto 681B was my first monopod. I still like it and own it. depending on the head, it's not bad at all. one caveat: keep it away from sand - which will destroy the extension mechanisms. for lighter rigs, I used it with the discontinued Kirk MPA-1, which is literally the Manfrotto 234 head converted by Kirk for Arca-Swiss plates. Note that this head is only rated for circa 6 lbs. So, light loads only.

I added two Sirui monopods for moderately heavier loads: first, the 6 section, CF, P-326 - with the Sirui L-10 tilt-head. This monopod is a bargain, as is the head (note: Sirui has added a heavier rated version of this head). then, for long days when I need a footed monopod, I added the P-426S (can be hard to find), 6 section CF "video" pod. Neither of these are a hardship.

The RRS monopod head (MH-01) is better - more stable - with heavier L lenses. it's relegated the Sirui head to mostly backup duty.

adding a 600/4 IS II resulted in the Gitzo 5 series monopod with Sidekick (& a companion 5 series tripod & full gimbal). Not recommended for day long wilderness outings. if you ever need 600mm or more in the wilderness and cannot afford Ansel's mule train, consider Sony's RX-10 Mk IV. Life is all about compromises!

Enjoy,
dale

PS - A suggestion - many mount ball heads on monopods - which, IMHO, is a very, very BAD idea. stick with the tilt-only heads that are designed for monopod use. these heads move in only one direction (a blessing), unlike ball heads which, when loosened, flop in every direction (at the same time!). when using a tilt-only monopod head, if you need to pan left or right, turn the stick. :-)
