I don't have major issues with it, but it seems like the battery life is worse than the 5D Mark III or my 1D Mark II.

This concerns me, as I plan for a 5D4 to be my next camera, and battery life is a very important consideration for me.

By the way, I thought you were a 1Dx2 user, not a 5D4 user. . Did something change in that regard? . Your gear list still shows a 1Dx2 and a 5D3, but no 5D4.

Are you using older batteries, say from your 5D2/5D3 days? As they age, the batteries won't hold charge as well. There's a menu in camera that shows you battery health information (can't remember where it is right now, don't have camera in front of me).

I'm not sure battery duration is quite as bad as Mike implies but it is not as long lasting as all previous 5Dx versions. But this is to be expected when you consider how much more this camera does and it does it using nearly the same previous battery.

Yeah, battery life on mine was terrible from the jump but improved after I used it for a little while. Not sure if the batteries need some sort of breaking in period or anything, but the life is pretty terrible at first. I did get a battery grip to help ease the pain and now I can shoot all day without worrying about running the batteries dry.

Keep in mind that the 5DIV picked up a few features (GPS, wifi, touchscreen, etc) that affect battery life. Make sure what you don't use is turned off!

Turn off the Wi-Fi and GPS, lower the LCD screen brightness, keep the LCD screen off as much as possibly, less displayed activity in the viewfinder....

The need for some initial charge/discharge cycles to improve life seems to be controversial. Having said that I have experienced it with a 3rd party LP-E6 battery to the point that on initial purchase I thought it was defective. But after about 3 charge/discharge cycles its life seemed to match the Canon battery life and may have been better. FYI these batteries are only shipped at about a 50% charge state.

When battery life affects your use of the camera, it is a problem.

The goal is not to extend the battery life as long as possible. . Rather, the goal is to ensure that you get as many quality photos as possible.

Some of us achieve this by liberal use of the LCD screen to evaluate the shots we have just taken so that we can make adjustments for the next photos we take. . Constant evaluation is a big part of my photography workflow; suggesting that we alter our workflow is not very helpful. . Of course there are things we can do to keep the battery alive, but doing those things messes up our photo-taking ventures.

The OP wasn't asking for how to preserve battery life. . He was just venting / complaining about it ...... which quite valid to do when we find that an expensive piece of gear does not perform up to our expectations.

Just BTW I have the same issues with my 7DII + Sigma 15-600c combo. I need to walk around with a spare battery in my pocket even with GOS and wifi off.

With my 7D + canon 100-400V1 I can do multiple outings and still have charge to spare.

With my new setup I have constant distance anxiety.

Mike,
- Your coming from 1D batteries, so yes it's a LOT less shots per charge. Like 1/3 - 1/5 the shots.

- Yes, the 5D4 uses more battery than the 5D3, but here it's not as big a difference.

Everything was updated on the 5D4 vs. 5D3, AF performance, frames per second, larger sensor more data to crunch. But, it's the same battery. 5D4 definitely appears to consume more power. So it's seems reasonable to me that it would have about 4/5 the battery life of the 5D3.

That said, you and I shoot very differently, I rarely chimp, and I have almost everything turned off. So I remain pretty satisfied with the 5D4. Perhaps the toll on battery is higher the way you shoot.

Without question when shooting side by side with a 1D, the difference is just plain silly.
