For several years I had (struggled with?) a Tamron 70-300 Di. The lens was capable of some very nice images - when it focused accurately and quickly enough. But that was the problem, AF was not reliable and not nearly fast enough for BIF. So I decided to replace it. I tried the Canon EF 100-400L II which was a wonderful lens and the EF 70-300L. What may surprise some is that I chose the 70-300 because it was small enough to fit in my bag so it's always available - don't have to plan to take it - and it's still pretty long on my 7DII. It's very nearly as good as the 100-400 II and the AF is extraordinary.

But the 100-400 II is the one that gets the attention and the various 70-200s are considered by many to be essential tools. The 70-300 is sort of neglected. So this post is to point out just how good this lens is and how well it fits into my kit. Here are a few BIFs - even some of some quick little birds - just to show how quick and accurate this lens is. Enjoy.

Hard to argue with the 70-300. Love the first shot. Very captivating.
