I'm new to the idea of printing - especially printing for others. So when I print for myself it's easy enough, but say I were to do a 11x14" print for someone else, and it had a 1/2" white border around it (matting, to sign, etc.)

Would the PAPER size be 11x14, and therefore the actual print be 10x13, or would the PRINT be 11x14 and the PAPER size 12x15 (very non-standard)

Just wondering what's the common printing process/expectations? The former makes the most sense to me, I think, but could result in a photo "being smaller" than expected, especially depending on if they end up doing any trimming/mounting.

Don't know if this answers your question, but when I print 11x14, for myself or for someone else, I normally print slightly larger (11.5x14.5) to allow for an 11x14 mat, on 13x19 paper, with whatever margin that results in.

I believe standard matte sizes or 1/2" smaller than stated image size.

Wife just purchased a 8x10 frame with 5x7 matte.

Actual matte opening is 4 1/2" x 6 1/2".

We routinely print 11x14 images on A3+ (13x19") paper. The printer puts the image cell in the middle of the paper. Then we use a standard mat for a 16x10 frame that has a 11x14 opening. The mat should always over lap the paper. Note than the mat opening will be a fraction smaller than 11x14 so that no white paper shows. So never put anything important in the image on the edge of the photo.

At least one web site says the nominal size vs. opening size is 0.5" difference...
8x10 matte opening really has 7.5" x 9.5" opening

I'm not sure this answers the OP's question.

I've never bought a print that I was going to put in a standard frame, but if I buy a 11x14 print from someone, what size do I expect the actual printed part of the paper to cover? 11x14 or 10x13? or perhaps something just a bit bigger than 10x13 so that I can be sure it will fit in an 11x14 matte?
