not sure about how i feel about this one

on one hand, we already know the f2.8 v2 is a fantastic lens as it is, i picked up mine many years ago brand new for a stupidly good price (and i still own it today, this lens along with the 24-70 2.8 v2 are among my least used lenses but when i DO get to use them they are always amazing so i just can't bring myself to sell them lol), the target market for this v3 is obviously not for us that already owns the v2 it's aimed at people maybe coming from v1 or wanting to get their first 70-200 f2.8 lens, also part of me is very happy i won't feel the urge to upgrade my v2 lol

on the other hand i can see how some people might be upset, especially for the length of time v2 has been out (what, like 8 years?) yet canon made no attempt to try to upgrade optical formula or at very least IS like they did with the f4 version, but it's funny most complaints are the usual whingers that just wants to criticise canon whatever chance they get and don't shoot canon system or people that never would get the lens anyway

i guess ultimately no one is pointing a gun to your head forcing you to buy the new lens, so while i can understand some people being disappointed at the lack up upgrade i really can't understand why anyone would get so upset over lens releases, it's not like previous version had some fatal flaw that needed fixing -?

i will say this tho, i know the f2.8 v2 when shot at 200mm at or very close to MFD sharpness falls off quite noticeably when moving away from center of frame, thought i was crazy initially but ended up confirming with a few people that also had the lens at the time, take a couple steps back and and it's all good and sharp across the frame tho, doubt this phenomenon is fixed with the v3 since it's same optical formula but who knows

+1 on that.

I'm considering gluing mine shut.

Use a rubber band instead. Chances are that if you sell it the buyer would not like to see the trap glued, although he'd appreciate your job the moment he really starts using the lens ;-)a

Great! Let us all know how you like it compared with the v1.

.
I don't think there is anyone getting "so upset" over this release.

Some people get disappointed when a new release doesn't have what they have been hoping for and waiting for, but just 'cause they're disappointed doesn't mean that they are "so upset".

____ ______ _____ ____ ______ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____

The one area in which I was really hoping for improvement is in that of closeup capabilities. . I had been hoping that when Canon upgraded the 70-200mm f2.8, that they would make it a much better closeup performer by significantly decreasing the minimum focus distance, like they did when they upgraded the 100-400mm.

It is disappointing to me that they didn't make this a real close up performer with stronger magnification and edge-to-edge sharpness at or near MFD. . If they did, I would definitely be buying it. . But there is no reason for me to buy this new release with the virtually unchanged magnification ratio.

A dedicated macro lens is not for me. . Instead, I want near-macro capabilities in a general purpose mid-range or long-range telephoto zoom. . The new 100-400mm comes close to meeting my needs, but it just isn't quite there .... just a bit more magnification and I'd have what I need. . Looks like I'll have to keep waiting, because this new 70-200mm just doesn't offer much improvement in the area that is most important to me.

"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

...I don't get all the criticism,

A- I really didn't read anything in this thread as criticism, merely pointing out the facts.
I know in my case I always look for the humor, (I honestly think I am funny, maybe no one else does! :) ) but I am not being critical. I agree with you it's better to make small steps than to stand still. I do seriosuly question the name VIII. For Canon this really is a first on a lens update, to call it a new version with the same optics, electronics, and specs.

if Canon didn't upgrade people would say that they are behind, blah, blah.I welcome the upgrade.

B- In the case of the VII to VIII, it's not really an upgrade. Again,. just pointing out the fact. Maybe you are one of those that will run out an swap your VII for the VIII? In which case, I say go for it and let us know how it goes.

I agree. Sometimes people post here what they are seeing on other forums. Blur the line. I can't imagine it refers to this thread? Or maybe we just read it differently.

My most wanted 'feature' for the 2.8 update would have been lighter weight. 3.26 lbs down from 3.28 lbs. Consider me unimpressed in that regard. I had higher hopes.

I do look forward to seeing images and reviews. Those ultimately will decide if it's an upgrade for me or not.
