I've tried several times to add an image to Birds in Pairs. The uploader gets to 99% and stops there. I've posted this image before without a hitch.

I can't post it in this post, either. Same story, 99%.

To test, I uploaded another image to the Colors Game. That worked.

The image may be corrupted slightly, or has some bits that do not agree with our binaries.

Do you have that image online somewhere? PM me if you can use only email (you may have my email already, send it to that).

Can you try this: resave the image in jpeg and try again.

The original is posted somewhere in POTN, but that's a big place. I made a copy and tried to upload, without success. Then I cropped the copy ever so slightly. This small change solved the problem, which remains a mystery to me. I don't really understand what corruption is.

Did you open it and make the first copy? Or did you right click and copy it in mac finder/windows explorer?

Neither of those applies to my system. I highlighted (= "chose" in Mac terms) the original and did Command-D (= "duplicate this"). Strangely, I couldn't change the title of the copy until I'd cropped a little off.

I'm mac too.

Command D in the Finder will replicate any corruption that may be present in the original file. For some reason your system is reading the file fine, but the POTN server is getting hung up on it.

If you open the file and make a change it will rewrite the entire file. It 'should' also rewrite the file if open in a program and choose the File drop down and then "save as" from that menu ... changing the file name and creating a new file on your computer.

Furter, when you highlighted and pressed command D, that is the same as a right click > duplicate.

If you have a single button mouse, pressing control click will bring up a menu that will have a duplicate option. That will do the same thing as Command D.

Thanks. The File menu doesn't have Save As; I looked for it while casting about for solutions. Cmd-shift-S, formerly Save As, is now the command for "duplicate"! This is the Sierra OS.

I have a touchpad, no mouse. I may as well use Cmd-D. It's easy, and I'm used to it.

Open the file in an editor, then file > save as. Maybe save a copy.

...

Depending on the program you have the file opened in ... if it is Preview (a Mac OS program) it might be Export.

It's Preview, and the File menu does have an Export. So that's what that is. It seemed irrelevant. Thanks.

Used to be, you got good at something–you learned a trade–and you were all set, you could pass as a competent person. Now you have to be good at something and be good at computers, too. Grr.

On a mac, you can use Photos or iPhoto, and simply export the image to your desktop. . When you export you can set the title to be whatever you want it to be. . You also set the pixel dimensions to whatever you want. . Photos and iPhoto are really great programs for prepping images that you intend to post online.

And of course it always works much better to post images here as attachments, not as embedded links or whatever that's called.

EDIT:
I just saw this (quote below). . Photos and iPhoto are so much better than Preview, for, like, almost everything. . And they come already loaded on to all macs! . They are extremely easy to use and intuitive, and there is virtually no learning curve whatsoever. . I mean, you will never have to spend even one minute trying to figure out how to do something or what to click on. . It's all just so obvious, even for the computer-illeterates like me. . And yet they are programs that do so much more than most people ever realize, because most serious photographers never even bother to try them out.

I love this assessment of the current state of things. . There are still a lot of things that you can excel at and not have to know anything about computers. . Unfortunately, photography is not one of them. . In fact, photography these days is even more computer-dependent than most things ..... which really sucks.

Allow me to cheerlead for Preview. Preview is built in, too. It automatically saves edited images to the Desktop, in fewer steps than Photos; it doesn't bring up an extra screen. Preview has what I can't find in Photos: sliders to reduce highlights and shadows. I use Preview routinely. I'll also run an image through Photos if it needs leveling or I want the clone tool. Preview lacks these features. I don't use them often. I'm getting better at holding the camera level. Once in a while, when I want to get rid of a stray leaf or bit of litter, I use the simple cloner in Photos (it only does circles), but the area ends up looking smeared. Either the tool is primitive or I'm using it wrong.

I guess I'll have to use Preview more to see if it does things that I can't do with Photos. . But I do prefer NOT to work on photos on my desktop, and greatly prefer an extra window just for photo work. . My desktop is already cluttered enough; the last thing I want is more photography-related stuff being done on it. . The one exception is that when I want to upload something to the net, I like to export it to the desktop because it's the easiest place to find it ..... as soon as the desktop copy is uploaded, I delete it.

These tools are right there in the Adjustments tab. When you're in Adjustments, they'll be right near the top under the Light section.

I have found the clone tool to be rather useful. . Yes, it is quite limited compared to similar tools in Lightroom and Photoshop, but it can actually be very effective for a lot of different types of cloning. . I'll post some examples a bit later on when I have more time.

I don't think Preview does more things than Photos (see below). If anything, it does fewer things (e.g., just one setting for sharpening; no noise reduction). It's just easy to use. You've said you and technology don't get along. If you use all those sliders in Adjustments in Photos, you and technology have a better relationship than I would have thought.

When you edit in Preview, the image and the editing screen cover whatever's on the Desktop behind them. There may still be distracting sights in the areas not covered.

These tools are right there in the Adjustments tab.

So that's where they are!
