So momma Robin has been sitting on the nest for awhile now. But I was getting confused. One time when I checked her she was sitting on the nest on the right. Than another time she would be sitting on the nest on the left. So today, when she had left to feed, I decided to check out the nests. Low and behold I found that she had two eggs in each nest. Apparently that was why I saw her on different nests at different times. Another unusual event from the robin. I hope it all works for her, but there is some doubt in my mind that all will end well.

That's crazy...I've never heard of a bird doing that. What the heck, maybe she know how to handle 2 nests (4 young). Papa is going to be mighty busy too, and he's got to be a good food provider.

And now for the first time yesterday, both nests were occupied. I would guess that the latest occupant was probably the mate. He was still around today sitting on the nest off and on. Wonder where he was all the previous days? I'm still really doubtful any of the eggs will hatch. I believe they are now overdue. Kinda sad in a way. All the effort that has gone into trying to have a family.:-(

It would be nice if they learn from their mistakes. :-)

Terry, I agree, this is probably going to be a failure, they are just mixed up for some reason apparently. Always been impressed by ground nesting birds being able to fly across one of my large hay fields only to drop like a rock right on their nest. A good clean field all looks the same and as the grass gets 3 feet tall and blowing in the wind the birds know right where home is. The Robins at your place seem to be getting lost between rafters like she can't remember which one she chose to call her home.
Having said this, I find myself acting a lot the same way these days. I'm working alone painting an entire block of 4th grade classrooms for our local school district, they are all exactly alike and at times I feel lost as to where to begin each morning. I'm blaming my problem on old age and being tired from trying to meet a deadline.

Steve, I do agree with you on the ground nesting birds. I always marveled at how they seem to survive in what I would call less than desirable condions, being on the ground. They are amazing. Hope you survive your more than busy schedule. Sounds a little like you may be working yourself up to a road trip. Take care.0ߘ

Yes Terry may be looking at a road trip if I can get my work done before the weather gets bad. Last year the snow caught me in Custer on Oct 8, spent some time at Canyon jct drinking coffee to calm my nerves from driving icy roads so Spearfish was my turn around point. My late fall trips may need to be toward the South :-)
