Silent Shutters: It’s time, Nikon and Canon

Maybe true on the lower end models and older cameras but my 5DIII has an excellent silent (well very quiet at least) shutter mode.

I don't mean just having a quiet shutter in silent mode. . Rather, I meant making the "regular mode" shutter noise very quiet . . . a very quiet shutter and mirror, even when shooting bursts in the fastest frames per second mode.

My Sony A73 came in today. It will be interesting to see if I get decent results in silent mode.

I bet at some point event organizers will start to require silent shutters in order to grant press access. It just wasn’t a realistic option before.

And we could even bet they would reverse their decision as fast as Seattle's city council reversed their multi million dollar head tax intended to pay for the homeless problem. If event organizers make rules that start blocking excellent and influencial photographers, the matter could come back and hit them so fast and hard their heads would spin.

For example, if Nat Geo was slated to attend an event and the photographer preferred an older camera, possibly even film, we'd find out in short order where the chips fall.

I've seen speculation that those Whitehouse press things will likely be the first venue to mandate mirrorless/silent shutter cameras. Long ago they banned a camera flash for the comfort of the speaker and so the security detail couldn't be blinded by the flash.

Speculation is pretty easy to come by these days. If even one person speculates, it can be said that speculation has been seen.

The flash thing was something I was thinking about the other day, watching an older movie about Gen. MacArthur. A lot of flash was used in some scenes.

Just ran into a situation where silent shutter really paid off: dance recital shots from the audience. Imagine firing off bursts with a noisy shutter during a quieter interpretive dance. No bueno.

But I just fired off 10fps bursts to catch shots of dancers mid leap without making a sound. And it tracked like a charm to boot.

Not many of us will ever shoot it the white house...but I'm sure many of us have kids or friends/relatives in the performing arts and yeah silent shutters are really handy here.

I shot 4k framed on e shutter for my kids recital. I shot the whole event for the studio.

Really makes a difference.

My 70D has a silent shutter mode. Not totally silent, but the annoying thing is it turns external flash off.

Anyway, watching the live meeting between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un was exciting, but those shutters are horribly distracting.

They might as well pass out bubble wrap to everyone in the room and yell “go” as the two presidents meet and talk to reporters.

It’s time to require silent shutters at press conferences. Canon and Nikon need to do this now.

Nah, none of them has AF point select confirmation beep.

We went to Nutcracker ballet in crappy casino at Niagara Falls once. It was one and only photog with DLSR. This moron has this beep enabled and he was walking past the sitting rows and snapping his crapshots, on and on and on. Just one morron and his beep. It was really nuts cracking loud.

Press conference... it is one or more morons at the stage and bunch of photogs. No music and nothing important, most of the time. No big deal, nothing spectacular to see and hear, so at least shutters clapping makes it sounds as something important. It is also cute then flashes goes on.
