So I haven't been much of a filter user yet and I needed a ND for my Sony lens (40.5mm) but didn't want to get a low quality ND with a color cast. I see there are some nice filters in 77mm size specifically the x2 and x4 by breakthrough photography. My question is can I get away with using step up rings and just get the 77mm filter or am I going to run into issues?

My wide 10-22 is 77mm so no problem there. The Sony is 16-50mm but I don't think a step up ring would interfere though I'm not certain. It is crazy that they actually make a 40.5 to 77mm. The next widest lenses I have are 35 & 40mm and those shouldn't pose a problem either. Just not sure if I'm overlooking something.

Thanks

Since you haven't been much of a filter user before, how has your "style" of photography changed that you now think you need ND's? They are somewhat specialized in their use.
