Just throwing this out there but I was checking the local prices of both these cameras and the r3 is nearly dbl the price of the r2. The r3 is currently out of my price range especially if I want any native glass to go with it. The r2 is a great value. Now I mainly only shoot portraits or portraits with landscapes so I dont need quick autofocus. In fact my 6d does just fine except the outer points are too close to center. Now the main reason i would switch to sony is the smaller size of mirrorless and its eye af. So for mainly portraits would the you recommend the r2 or r3?

I'd go for the R2 and get a nice portrait lens like the Sony 85 1.4. I highly doubt you'd notice enough difference between the two cameras for what you shoot to justify the price of the R3.

Hard to recommend the R2 when the R3 is available. I've read of folks buying the R3 for 2700 - 2800 from greentoe, new with USA warranty, so consider that into your equation as well.

the R2 will get you there the way a 5D classic gets you there, however the R3 feels and behaves like a 1Dx in comparison. The list of upgrades are mind boggling despite the sensor being the same. I've let a few R2 users that thought it wasnt worth the upgrade, purely from an academic level, however, with the R3 in hand, they were instant converts. Play with the cameras briefly, the differences are stark

Sony A7siii/A7iv/ZV-1 - FE 24/1.4 - SY 24/2.8 - FE 35/2.8 - FE 50/1.8 - FE 85/1.8 - F 600/5.6 - CZ 100-300 - Tamron 17-28/2.8 - 28-75/2.8 - 28-200 RXD
Panasonic GH6 - Laowa 7.5/2 - PL 15/1.7 - P 42.5/1.8 - OM 75/1.8 - PL 10-25/1.7 - P 12-32 - P 14-140

No question the R3 is a better camera than the R2, but for what the OP shoots, portraits and landscapes, how much better. I’d say it’s worse for landscapes as you don’t get the camera apps in the R3 which are hugely useful and on many tests, the noise at low ISO is worse in the R3.

For portraits, the R2’s eye focus tracking is just fine...i’ve used mine extensively while shooting an ophanage in Tanzania. What else does the R3 have over the R2 for portraits...I can’t think of a single substantive thing.

You can pick up a lightly used R2 for $1300...that’s 1/2 the price of a used R3. That extra $1300 can buy a very nice portrait lens like a Sony 85 1.4 or maybe a Batis 135.

I’d get the R2 today and await the R4.
