Great shots again.

Lovely, graceful things, yet their babies are vicious, scary mini-beasts.

After the loss of their last nest yesterday, my back garden Wasps returned to the same shrub today - I hope they choose a more secure anchor point location this time...:-)

Cheers

I wonder if it's possible to build something safe and secure that your pet wasps would want to nest in/on?

Your mission, should you choose to accept it ...

We have a couple of seasonal nests under the eves and I think these may be the off spring looking for alternate accommodation. They seem to choose the Sacred Bamboo Shrub which I think is known to shed its branches.

I have seen folks install "Bee Hotels" but never a "Wasp Hotel".:-)

Cheers

Great shots, especially the first. I don't know how you got so much magnification (and detail at f/16)!

Through my clever sleuthing I determined you used the 90D.

Thanks! I use the Raynox DCR-250 attachment with the Canon lens to get some more magnification, and it works really well. The 90D is a beast when it comes to these shots, as the level of detail that sensor retains is crazy and I can crop in really tight and have very little quality loss.

I always hear about diffraction limitations, especially of high MP sensors like the 90D, but in practice with these shots I just don't see it. I'm sure parts would be sharper at f/8 or below, but the DoF would be so thin that without stacking the image would be useless. Also, since these are live subjects that don't really like to sit still, I'm hand-hold, and using a flash...that just makes stacking a difficult proposition.

I did just pick up the MP-E65 lens as well, and I can tell that thing is going to take some time to get used to! I'll need to pick Nardes' brain a bit to see how he's pulling these shots off so well!

Interesting! Over the winter I picked up a DCR-250 to use with my 100mm L. I have the bare lens mounted via step up/down rings, avoiding that clippy contraption, so I have more freedom using diffusers. I have had no chance to try it out yet except for a few test shots. It will be another month before the bugs return here. Unfortunately there is another bug too called COVID-19 that might hinder my activities.

I also have the MPE65 and want to compare it to the 100mm/Raynox. The MPE65 is a miserable thing to use outdoors, but some have good success with it.

I usually shoot at f/11 and sometimes f/13, but having seen your results, want to push to f/16 and see how it goes.

A couple of very hastily captured hoverfly snaps. Used the YN685 with DIY diffuser, manual exposer on the camera set for DOF and shutter speed and let the TTL on the speedlite give me some fill light.

And a hoverfly, probably Eristalis tenax, in the magnolia tree.
