A couple of very hastily captured hoverfly snaps. Used the YN685 with DIY diffuser, manual exposer on the camera set for DOF and shutter speed and let the TTL on the speedlite give me some fill light.

Disappointingly few cooperative critters in the garden today.

White Weevil. Not the most handsome bug you're likely to see

Interesting! Over the winter I picked up a DCR-250 to use with my 100mm L. I have the bare lens mounted via step up/down rings, avoiding that clippy contraption, so I have more freedom using diffusers. I have had no chance to try it out yet except for a few test shots. It will be another month before the bugs return here. Unfortunately there is another bug too called COVID-19 that might hinder my activities.

I also have the MPE65 and want to compare it to the 100mm/Raynox. The MPE65 is a miserable thing to use outdoors, but some have good success with it.

I usually shoot at f/11 and sometimes f/13, but having seen your results, want to push to f/16 and see how it goes.

How do you find using the Raynox in terms of light loss, I used to use a closeup lens in the film days sometimes, my memory is you did not get light loss.

Thanks Arch, I'd have like to have been a bit closer to avoid cropping but you take what you can get eh? :)

This is the second frame that I took of a Chafer Beetle eating pollen. You'll have to let me know if this shot works cause the critter's eye is almost completely covered.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (2x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT with a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe on the "A" head (the key), E-TTL metering, -1/3 FEC, second curtain sync). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Sharpen AI, Denoise AI, and Clarity in that order.

There is no (noticeable) light loss with an auxiliary lens. I have not measured anything yet with the Raynox, but do have quite a bit of experience with the Canon 500D.

Had a look on-line and the only ones I can find are the Marumi (external link), I don't know if anyone has tried these.

Wow, expensive. Might be worth while trying a smaller diameter one with a step-down ring. I have used the Canon 500D 58mm on my 100-400mm II lens and observed no vignetting. (However, the image quality was not great.)

I have a Marumi 300, Lester. It's fine, as good a piece of glass as a Raynox, but the 'look' that comes out of it is different. I can't explain it....

I have also used the Marumi in conjunction with one or two Raynoxes when I used my little Canon S120 as a macro-rig. IQ is not great, but I enjoyed getting photographs with the set-up. Here's a couple of examples....
