Technique: I found this Chafer beetle feeding early in the day and it didn't seem to mind me getting close. I held on to the flower's stem with my left index finger and thumb, and then rested the lens on that same hand to keep the scene steady. I took this shot in 2015, but I took another editing pass since my post processing has improved. Always back up your RAW files.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 200 with highlight tone priority) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (over 2x) + a diffused MT-24EX (both flash heads on the Canon flash mount, E-TTL metering with -1 2/3 FEC). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held.

A good subject for the MP-E. Looks quite natural.

Very nice. I will have to try holding the stem some time. Usually whenever I touch or move anything, the bug is gone.

I've been trying to work out what you mean by tango-uniform. Toes up?

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

Amazing clarity. I didn't know they blew bubbles.

I've seen the results of this behaviour a couple of times now, but I'm not sure if they obtain the droplet of liquid from somewhere else for drinking, or if they produce it?

Cheers

Dennis

It doesn't always work, but if the working distance is short enough for you to rest the lens on the same hand that's holding the flower you can get a lot of control over the framing and where the depth will be in the scene when the critter doesn't get spooked. Actually works best when it's windy.
