These stacked images were taken in our back garden with the Wasps resting on the berries of our Sacred Bamboo Shrub.

I used the combination of Canon (EOS-R) + (RF-EF Adapter) + (Helicon FB Tube (external link)) + (EF II Extension Tube 25mm) + (EF Extender x1.4 Mk III) + (180mm F3.5L Macro lens).

Cheers

Dennis

Another batch of buglings hatching from their eggs this morning :)

Stephen these are very nice and must be fascinating to watch.
Does the insect sit on, stand over the eggs, babies as a bird on a nest? Waiting for them to hatch?
Beautiful photo.

Dennis these really are astounding images.
You've perfected the process so beautifully.
Fascinated by these. Have a real Wow factor to them

Nice hoverfly! I had to click on the "IMAGE FAILED" message to view it, however. I have noticed the same issue with some of your other posts too! (But only yours.)

Yes seems to be an AMASS thing, it should load on page refresh, else click the link in the icon, I see it with others images from time to time.

Another Helicon FB Tube stacked wasp but this time with the Canon 100mm F2.8L and the closer working distance has reduced the specular highlights and hot spots from the MT-26 EX macro flash. (Compared to shots taken with the 180mm F3.5 macro lens which has a greater closest focus distance, forcing the flash further away from the subject).

Cheers

Looks great. I see signs of only one light in the 180mm pics. Anyway, the lighting in the 100mm shots looks very good. How are you focusing? MF or AF?

I always use AF with the Canon 100mm and 180mm Macro lenses, as I find it much more accurate and reliable for the types of shots I take, where the insect can be gyrating in the field of view due to breezes disturbing the foliage. When using the Helicon FB Tubes, the camera needs to be in AF Mode and Continuous Drive (I use low speed).

All these are taken tripod mounted and using a Remote Release whist I am eyeballing the rear LCD screen to check where the insect is, as often it blows out of the view.

Cheers

Dennis

Thanks. I guess tripod use would work for wasps that are staying more or less in one location. I also find AF to be more successful than MF, but use both.

I’m at that age where I need reading glasses (spectacles) for close up tasks so I only use MF when I have to - the Canon MP-E 65 for example. But as mentioned before, even this becomes very user friendly due to the Focus Assist on the EOS-R (assistive Triangles that Align and Overlap when in focus in the VF or rear LCD).:-D

I haven’t tried using the Helicon FB Tube free hand, I’m not sure the alignment of the subject would be optimum between frames, compared to when mounted on a fixed tripod (at least for me!):-)

Cheers

Dennis
