Jay, a marvellous set of bug pics. Very interesting subjects too.

That weevil has quite the proboscis. Not sure if I have seen one like that.

I have a pic of a stubby beetle that somewhat resembles yours. I think it was in the Pachybrachis genus. Pic below.

I too have never seen a white ladybug before... but I have seen all-black ones.

I've seen metallic-black beetles like that, and if they are the same kind, they are quite tiny.

The second grasshopper pic is quite stunning.

Thanks! You nailed it, that beetle is a Pachybrachis thoracicus, apparently.

I was going to ask what the size of the weevils everyone else was taking pics of because this thing was TINY. I have a cell-phone pic of it next to a penny for scale that I'll attach, but this little guy was hard to get shots of.

That white ladybug was a surprise! After looking it up they're not all that uncommon here, but not as common as the standard orange/black ones. We also have the all black, and a black/red version that I'm still looking for...those are harder to find here though

The metallic purple beetle was pretty small, about 1/8 of an inch or so if I had to guess. There's lots of them out now...but whenever I search for metallic purple beetle in Google I tend to get Volkswagens!

Your weevil is real tiny! Ours are small too, but not that small.

Thanks Richard! Yes, she sits over the eggs for about 10 days until they hatch, and then maintains guard over the first instar juveniles until their first moult. And she doesn't feed at all during this time!

Here is a different species that does the same thing... the Hibiscus Harlequin (Tectocoris diophthalmus), photographed yesterday.

These Hibiscus Harlequin eggs that I photographed 6 days ago have now hatched! The babies are all huddled together, but Mum is still keeping a careful watch over them :)

This Chafer Beetle is eating pollen on a Buttercup flower. I managed to get five frames before the critter realized I was close and stopped feeding.

Tech Specs: Canon 80D (F11, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens (around 2.5x) + a diffused MT-26EX-RT with a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe on the "A" head (the key), E-TTL metering, -1/3 FEC, second curtain sync). This is a single, uncropped, frame taken hand held. In post I used Topaz Sharpen AI, Denoise AI, and Clarity in that order. I was holding on to the flower's stem with my left hand, and then resting the lens on that same hand to help keep the scene steady.
