Robber fly, Laphria spp. This dastardly fly looks like an innocent bumblebee to the casual eye, but is actually an aggressive robber fly. Its disguise helps it to attack and eat other bugs, including bumblebees.

Amazing Capture. I've never seen one of those around here though I do see robber flies once in a while.

Amazing shot! Are you using a ring flash?

Diffused 580EX flash.

It looks like this. The fan-shaped thing attached to the front of the lens is translucent plastic. The thing on the flash is the snoot. It is made of an old 8x10 color print with aluminum foil on the inside surface. With this rig I can shoot at f/11 and ISO 100 (low ISO is good for reducing the effects of ambient light), with a flash power of about 1/8, which gives a very short burst to stop movement. The sheets costs practically nothing and store flat, which is handy for travel.

A ring flash produces ring highlights on reflective surfaces, which does not look good on reflective bugs.

awesome setup. I'll have to make one. I usually shoot in natural light but it would be nice to be able to shoot at different times of the day.

Natural light is great. But the higher the magnification, the harder it becomes to get good macro shots. That's when flash can really help.

Thanks for the link "fascinating facts about stick insects." They are an amazingly interesting insects. I truly enjoyed reading about them.

Great shot, Archibald. The diffused flash really lights him up nicely without producing that typical flashed look.

That is a very pretty, colorful shot Paul. I never had thought of grasshoppers as being colorful like those...a truly nicely done shot.
