I was in Lethbridge two years ago, my daughter lives there. Spent a lot of time walking around taking pictures but didn't concentrate on bugs. Did get shots of grasshoppers, I guess they were. We did search for rattle snakes in an area with frequent sightings without success. Probably safer that way. Did go to a camera store and picked up the 100 F2.8L macro. Didn't use it there. Mostly stuck with my travel kit = 15-85 & 70-300L

I have a guess as to some idea as to what this thing might be. Due to the similarities of picture I had posted earlier, I believe this is the same bug but in the molting process?? It was Identified as a ladybug nymph. Please tell me your guess (or knowledge) of what it is.

This was the shot I posted earlier that provided me with the ID.

Side angle & view from the back. I kept the leaf it is stuck to & put t in a potted plant so I can maybe keep an eye on it. Can't wait to see what it turns into.

Hi, Piggy. I'm no expert, but I think you are right, they are ladybugs, the first a larva, the others pupas. Nice captures!

Thank you. After a quick look online it seems we are correct. This is indeed a ladybug in it's pupae stage. I am curious as to how long it takes?. I saved it in a plant, I'll try to keep an eye on it if it doesn't disappear. If there are drastic changes I will take a few more images to show.

Funny and clever too. Shows the big size difference between flies that most people don't realize.

Thanks. I've kinda avoided this part of the forum since I broke my Tamron 90mm. Couldn't be true macro, as the fly is actually bigger than the sensor on my Nikon P-610.

WOW! This happened so fast! I went to the lake today to find something to bring home to shoot out of the heat of midday (not to mention sun). I found another ladybug nymph. Grabbed it & 2 very different looking ladybugs.

Here is the shot of the nymph with a few aphids for neighbors.

As it turns out, he must of been in the process of attaching himself for the molting process. I went back to the "studio" really about an hour later to find this!!!

Then I noticed it moving. It was moving up & down apparently to wiggle out of it's skin. Look how soft it is in comparison to the onw I posted earlier.

Now it really reminds me of a lobster tail.

Sorry to hear about the 90mm!! I hope you have plans to replace or repair it.

The word "macro" has been used loosely for many decades, so much so that nobody knows what it means any more. I think an operational definition would be photos that require closeup accessories. That works somewhat okay for the 35mm format. The strict 1:1 definition is actually not very good. Photocopiers with optical lenses have 1:1 lenses but nobody would call that macro. How about shooting 1:1 with a phone camera? Now that would be close.
