Went to a local indoor Butterfly Park here in Phoenix to test out the R5 for a couple hours. Overall I have nothing but great things to say about this camera! My only complaint for the day would be that the Animal Eye AF didn't detect the butterflies eyes (but it did work on a jumping spider the night before!)

Great butterfly shots! Thanks for the report. In what ways is the R5 good for macro? What tricks or advantages does it have/

Thanks!

The EVF is awesome. Being able to see the exposure just takes the guess-work out of the settings on a shot you might otherwise miss. Obviously, if you're going to use a flash it's a bit of a different story

On the 100mm f/2.8L IS macro lens, I'll normally use auto focus as it tends to do a good job, and it's usually pretty quick. The R5 autofocus is leaps better than my 90D or 5DS. Faster, more accurate, and being able to put the focus point anywhere on the screen (and it moves FAST) really helps compose the shot the way you want it.

Manual focus is also a ton easier with the focus guide, and peaking. I had both of them turned on for a while and tried them out, and I could see using them a lot more as a viable option as well, especially for manual focus lenses. Of course you're always fighting the ultra narrow DoF.

For hand-held stacking I could see the 20FPS electronic shutter coming in handy...but that's not something I do all that often.

Using the 100-400 for pseudo-macro work is better on the R5 because the focus just seems more accurate out of the box. No more AFMA to worry about.

The mechanical shutter is extremely quiet, so it's less likely to disturb a subject.

The animal eye AF actually worked on a jumping spider and the AF point followed the spider around as it moved in the frame...that was fun to watch!

The IBIS seems to work pretty well with the 100mm f/2.8L IS lens. That first picture I posted was at 1/25 sec. I would normally never go that low on the 90D or 5DS. However, it's not perfect going that low, I did get some out of focus shots as well.

Overall, the R5 works very well for macro...and really I'm not too surprised by that.

That is a good thumbs up for the R5 and obviously your photography skills too. Great set of photos! I will start saving up for an R5.
