I think I'm staying away from canon macro gear, hate to say it. My 100mm broke again in less than a year (actual usage time was 3-4 months), & warranty was only 6 mos. What makes it even more frustrating is it's the focusing ribbon that "breaks" & I rarely have it in AF???!!!?? It might be somewhat tolerable if operation in manual focus was still a viable option, but it just throws an error code. If I remember correctly (?) someone here was having some type of repeating issues with the MP65 1x-5x lens. Add this to some of the posts I have been reading here about Canon quoting crazy cleaning/repairing prices.

The Laowa lenses have been getting wonderful reviews, some claiming sharper than the Canon 100mm??? I'm in manual focus 99% now so not much adjustment. I've checked the specs, my 2x rig currently (100mm + full set tubes) is a full 2.5 inches longer than the Laowa 100mm 2x. Can't focus to infinity either with the tubes attached, although I haven't had that need yet while shooting macro.

Sorry Archibald, this wasn't directed at your post it was just me venting on Canon.

Very sorry to hear your woes with the 100mm. That is very disappointing. Some time ago PCS (who posted here often) had his 100mm fail. I have heard many stories of the MPE 65mm failing too. These lenses are very expensive and it is no fun when they fail outside of the warranty period.

The new RF 100mm is very expensive. Hopefully Canon has learned something and made these more robust.

LAOWA have it on their page of reviews which is nice.

Not being a pro, I did it as a general end user, and it reads ok I think.

Yes, the price takes your breath away. It will be a tough decision to upgrade if you already have the EF 100.

PCS here, mine was/is the IS version and it's not a ribbon cable that failed but the focus mechanism was slipping. Considering the age(about 10 years) and the cost of repair I tried to repair it myself. The original fault is gone but I seem to have damaged some of the ribbon cables/connections  so now it's manual only for everything. I bought a new one (with free extended warranty:5 years) which works:

Due to work I have less time to take photo's and with a cold spring lots of flower's are late blooming so the bugs are only starting to come out in the garden.
I'm starting to dislike the forum 'like' culture between some posters(have you seen how many likes and compliments some very bad pictures get?) so I quit giving likes and ignoring given ones. When I feel like it I'll post some pictures(I still like looking at a most) and when there's a direct question or I (think) I know the answer to a general one I'll respond.

Thanks for this useful contribution, PCS!! Lots of interesting info in your post.

Kudos for trying to repair the lens yourself. It is definitely worth trying in situations like you describe.

And yes, I have noticed questionable photos in some forums getting lots of likes. I don't know the reason. Pekka keeps reminding us that comments are more meaningful than likes.

Nice shots of the ladybug and dragonfly, especially the dragonfly.

Macro photography is about learning as much as about pretty pictures, so we appreciate any sharing of knowledge.

I'd like to "break" mine. At least this would allow me to shoot in manual focus instead of having a $600 paper weight.
