Archibald that's a beautiful capture. And interesting.
I'm not a bug bod, and would never have guessed that would transform to those little coloured beauties.
How long from this to the final outcome as a ladybug? Assume they're same as what I call ladybird?

Thanks! Insect metamorphosis is really amazing, one of nature's wonders. Yes, they turn into those round red ladybugs (but not true bugs), and some call them ladybirds (not true birds either). Politically-correct folks call them lady beetles. :-)

I am not familiar with the different instars (larval stages), which would be extra confusing anyway because there are likely different species involved.

Good one Archibald!! ...There are many here in my yard and garden over the past couple weeks.

Thanks! We have many here too (here = Calgary). They like to be around wild rose bushes because of the aphids there.

This first one was really tiny, probably less than 1cm. Finally managed to get the eye on focus. Second one was minuscule, too. Ah, the fun of focusing with barely any depth of field. :-)

Nice shots!

After a too long pause, I am back in the bush doing macro bugs, and like you, am finding focus to be difficult. I'd forgotten how challenging it can be when hand-holding. Autofocus is not up to it, and you can't get critical focus with manual focus either when you can't magnify the image. So I'm falling back on the Rule of Six, which is: Take at least 6 shots as best you can, and most likely one will be OK.

Mostly micro moths tonight - 3 different ones, plus a beetle and a cobweb spider.

So far, two negatives with the Laowa. The first is with the protective filter. I had a very difficult time getting off my macro flash mounting ring. They both came screwed off & was only able to separate with one of the jar opening "grips". The second is slightly alarming, although so far has only happened with the tubes attached. The lens has stayed at the set aperture (f/11) after firing the shutter instead of returning to wide open for focus of next shot. It rights itself when I push the shutter again, still a little concerned. If it only happens with the tubes I'll live with it as it most likely is not a lens issue but probably a tube (contacts) issue. However, if it happens during normal, intended use I may need to send it back.

Very nice hoverfly portrait. I'm wondering what optical powers that droplet on the eye gives the fly.

A honeybee in a wild rose blossom. This bee was very active, wriggling like anything in the flower.

A beautiful Swallowtail moth - one of our largest Geometrids. Ourapteryx sambucaria.

Being strictly nocturnal and having quite a short emergence period in late June - July, it is not often encountered by the non-enthusiast.

With that in mind, I am quite pleased to have had the opportunity to photograph one.

Thanks. I was watching a YouTube video by a very accomplished macro photographer and his advice was not to worry too much if you get lots of out-of-focus shots - just keep shooting and now and again you will be spot on with focus. He reckons he manages about one in ten actually in focus. I come home with a hundred shots and if I find a couple I am really happy with, that's not a bad day.

It's all about the light...
