Thank you. It was a little bit of a startle when I turned over the leaf & saw this guy.

A beautiful Swallowtail moth - one of our largest Geometrids. Ourapteryx sambucaria.

Being strictly nocturnal and having quite a short emergence period in late June - July, it is not often encountered by the non-enthusiast.

With that in mind, I am quite pleased to have had the opportunity to photograph one.

Interesting - cool that you had the opportunity.

I thought it was the (same) brimstone at first until I got to look closer. All that yellow confused me!

So I went to my little carrying cage first thing this morning to release this very hairy caterpillar back onto the plant I found it on. I did not see it right away, but knew it had no escape. I found it after moving some leaves, it had removed all of it's ornamental hair & used it to fashion a cocoon!

I'll add a shot of it a little later, may have to hold onto it to see what comes out.

I had the tubes attached to the Laowa & automatically turned it to 2x (which I'm guessing gives me 3x?) This guy was a little bigger than I had anticipated & had to back off to get full body in. The lens markings read 1.5:1 when it fit so it's probably more like 2:1.

I know it's camo is a thorn, I just call it the Rhinoceros bug, believe a leaf hopper.

I really need to sort out my sensor - it's riddle with dust and badly needs a clean. Below you can see what I end up with after removing dust spots in Photoshop - this is a spittle bug taken this evening:

Looks OK doesn't it?

Now see what it started off like!!!

Thank you for the ID.

What do you all feel about this lens (based on the samples I've posted)? I have a hard time trying not to be over critical of new equipment.

This guy was only an inch in length, very photogenic. This was around 1.5:1

I like the results..But you have to be pleased with it yourself...
I will say this,...Just enjoy your new lens and the great images that you produce. It is a stress reliever not a stress builder. ;-)a
You will get the "new jitters" off in a while and have it all worked out.
I enjoy the images and think it produces sharp and terrific photos. Play around with the lens and find it's strong points and emphasize those in your work. It's an amazing tool for sure.
Thanks for sharing your photos.

Thanks for the input. Always anxious with new gear, especially until the 15 day return period ends. ;-)a It's a great lens & like advertised, I'm not going to get 1x-2x in a single lens anywhere else (& 3x w/tubes). I'm sure it won't take long before I'm recommending this lens to everyone.

This shot is the exact moment he decided to jump on my lens. He did it several times, did not appear to be afraid of me at all. I learned they do a little "wiggle" as they're getting ready to jump.

Cool photo!!
The mantis is a serious predator...even catching hummingbirds and other small birds, mammals, etc.
It may have been "fighting" its own reflection in your lens.
