Nice ones. Better to meet a bee than a spider.

Hey gang:-)
Can anyone ID what the white dots are on this Bee as it's the first time I've seen this.
Thanks

Michael456 wrote in post #18689935 (external link)
Definitely pollen, and I don't think they're out of focus. Some flowers (like Malva, for example) have pretty large and whitish pollen. I have some shots of bees on Malva flowers - I can post one later when I'm at home.

As promised, here's a shot of a bee on a Malva flower with pollen much like that in your photo:

And a close-up of the flower that shows the stamens with the pollen:

So many!! I guess out of hundreds, only a couple will survive to have young of their own.

Nicely captured.
You've had some interesting images of rather tatty wings.
How bad does it get before they no longer function?
That butterfly top photo looks like it's had a bite out of one wing.

I believe the life expectancy of bees and bumble-bees is somewhere between 1-3 months(some live longer) so after a few weeks you start to see the first signs of decay. I don't know how much wing they can lose before they are no longer able to fly. We had a very warm, dry summer but lots of wind and many of flowers are gone to seed much earlier so I think the bugs are having a tough time.

Very nice Archibalt. The larva certainly aren't as pretty as the finished product. :-)

That's an amazing stack, very sharp. And the fly looks like it is in flight.

Thank you. I was happy with the results Helicon Focus was giving me until my license expired. I will be re-purchasing it w/ the lifetime license. Many of you love Zerene Stacker but I've been unable to try it for some reason, so it looks like I'll stick with Helicon. If I remember correctly the critter "in flight" was a type of bee, not fly. I mount the bug with a needle sticking out of a wine cork then clone it out later.

I love this thread, so many amazing images!!
