Thanks Michael456 wrote in post #18689935 Definitely pollen, and I don't think they're out of focus. Some flowers (like Malva, for example) have pretty large and whitish pollen. I have some shots of bees on Malva flowers - I can post one later when I'm at home.
And a close-up of the flower that shows the stamens with the pollen: C&C always welcome

You've had some interesting images of rather tatty wings. How bad does it get before they no longer function? That butterfly top photo looks like it's had a bite out of one wing. I believe the life expectancy of bees and bumble-bees is somewhere between 1-3 months(some live longer) so after a few weeks you start to see the first signs of decay. I don't know how much wing they can lose before they are no longer able to fly. We had a very warm, dry summer but lots of wind and many of flowers are gone to seed much earlier so I think the bugs are having a tough time.

Aug 22, 2018 17:22 | #643 Archibald wrote in post #18688972 That's an amazing stack, very sharp. And the fly looks like it is in flight. Thank you. I was happy with the results Helicon Focus was giving me until my license expired. I will be re-purchasing it w/ the lifetime license. Many of you love Zerene Stacker but I've been unable to try it for some reason, so it looks like I'll stick with Helicon. If I remember correctly the critter "in flight" was a type of bee, not fly. I mount the bug with a needle sticking out of a wine cork then clone it out later.
