Those are good, and the in-flight shot is real good!

Like you, I find that some flies (but not all) take off when the flash goes off. In ETTL, the pre-flash does that and then I get an empty frame with the main exposure. So now I set the flash to manual. Then there is no pre-flash, and I get at least one shot before the fly flies.

So far I have not captured in-flight flies like you. I should go back to ETTL and see what I get!

Most of the leafhoppers I encounter are pretty discrete. They blend with their surroundings and are tiny too. But there are exceptions. Here is a leafhopper from the Netherlands. I don't know what advantage the bright colors give them.

That one is really a beauty Archibald...quite colorful. With colors like that, I seems they'd be much easier prey.

Curious what's happening in th second.
Who comes off the worst?
Might look obvious, but I've learnt from this forum size matters little

Rasperry crown borer (P marginata), a clearwing moth. These bugs look like yellowjackets but are just harmless moths.

He sure does look like a yellowjacket, Archibald. If that landed on me I'd be a runnin' and a swattin'. Very nice shot.

Thanks. I know what you mean by appearances, but in this case, I think the little bug was the prey.
