I'm also still experimenting with the RF100, and I too have turned off focus at half-press of the shutter button. There are those who say backbutton focus isn't needed any more with mirrorless, but I can't figure that out, so am still using it, successfully I think!

I have the * button programmed to switch to eye AF for times when I switch to birds or other large critters. Sometimes it even works for bugs.

yes, I have the AF-ON to start eye focus if possible, and I have the * button to use single point (which I may change the smallest point). I'll use eye if it works, but I find myself using the single point quite often with bugs. I have CF2 saved with the settings.

I still like the half press focus with birds, I have it set to use a wider area making it easier to get focus on flying birds, once that happens the AF-On I use to lock on the eyes where possible.

I believe this is a potter wasp, Odynerus sp. Natural light, shot with the R7 and RF 100mm L.
