Inflight, so not technically macro... but D-flys are such fun.

Well done. In-flight shots can be time-consuming to get.

Yes … took me two seasons before anything suitable. Technique and patience.
What I have seen is that They will run a pathway or circle back to the same spot to rest.

After a fairly mild couple of weeks, I had been starting to see a few insects emerging, but the weather forecast for last week was below freezing Sunday and Monday mornings. I was hoping that these conditions would help me reach one of my next photographic goals, which is to find butterflies and or dragonflies with heavily frosted wings, so I was up at 3:30 AM to get out on my usual trail with a couple of hours before daybreak to find my quarry.
Well, I searched and froze my tail off, but never found a single frosty insect. Yet after the sun came out and it warmed up a bit, out around the cabin I spotted a few butterflies and other critters.
Here is a Dance fly on newly forming Hornbeam leaves. The males of this species form swarms where the males capture or kill other insects, often another male dance fly to offer the females as a gift to choose it for a mate. Last year, I did get a couple of partially in focus shots, due to the wind blowing the twig with three of them hanging.
