I’ve just missed the egg-laying process several times, and molting over the years, then always look for them hatching, but haven’t been lucky enough until now.
These are Carolina Mantis; Stagmomantis carolina.

Wow, this looks amazing. So are these just-hatched mantises? Coming out of what? Is that a bunch of eggs all joined together?

Those tiny new-born mantises look to be ready to attack any small bugs they encounter.

Thanks Archibald, yes, I’ve read there can be 50-200 eggs in the mass. I was not able to stay and watch, because I had an appointment. However, I’ve read that some will eat their siblings for their first meal, which I would have loved to capture. For this reason they scatter quickly. There are 5 newbies coming out of close proximity to one end. I’m not sure if this was the beginning, or near the end of this clutch, but these are the best two of about 50 quick shots. As I’m sure you already know, the short depth of field at this magnification is a bugger.

I got one on my finger to give it scale. Pardon the dirty fingernail, but it was on the move, and hard to follow while maintaining focus.

This is probably the female that laid those eggs. I took these pics about 10 feet away last Fall from where I found these eggs this Spring.

Carolina Mantis, looking coy, or maybe threatening me with those spikes if I give her reason to use them.
