Saw this guy at the farm today. Didn't have my camera so I had to use my cell phone. He was about 3" long.

Nice! I wouldn't tangle with a 3 inch spider.

Thanks for the color version. I like both. They convey different feelings.

IMO it is good to experiment.

I hope you did not mind my little challenge.

I find that also with a lot of photos in B&W - they do indeed evoke different moods. And like Archie, I like both of your versions as well. :-)

Found this tiny critter buzzing around our Abelia this morning.
*edit- just found out it's a hoverfly! It turns out that they are great to have in the garden, as their larvae eat aphids!

The brown shield bug that I photographed protecting her eggs 3 days ago is now protecting babies! The eggs hatched today and I managed to get this quick shot just before it got dark tonight :)

That's good to see. We need Monarchs. Wow, the caterpillar looks a foot long on my monitor. Nice sharp shot.

Thanks Archibald. We did have this one yesterday. It was 24 above this morning, so that may have thinned the herd a bit.:-)

I think this is a Western Conifer Seed bug, rather than a stinkbug. Close cousins, and still very pretty!

A couple from the weekend. First one is a small potter wasp, Ancistrocerus auctus, looking for caterpillars to paralyse and take back to its nest for the grubs to eat when they hatch next spring.

And the second is a little weevil, taking the long route home.

Nice sharp pics! Parental care takes many forms! Nice B&W of the weevil in its graphically-attractive surroundings.

Apologies for the quality but I find it really hard to crouch down really low these days. My back and knees complain loudly!

I took this simply because I have never seen a small caterpillar with hairs that were quite so long. I am trying to get an ID but so far all I've managed to do is narrow it down to six hundred species ...

Any help would be appreciated. The body was approx 30mm long.
