Very nice. Excellent detail and wonderful bokeh. I spent some time with my 100-400 back when I used to shoot bugs, but the minimum focus distance never seemed to work out very well. Did you use tubes with it?

No I did not. I have tubes but was on a walk around the neighborhood and did not bring them with me.

Excellent shot.
I recently started using my 100-400 for larger insects, such as dragonflies and butterflies, and I think it works out better than my 100mm macro lens. The MFD is one meter, which is excellent for a lens this size. But for smaller critters, I've gotta give love to the dedicated macro.

the MKII focuses close enough for larger subject, the MKI was not as useful.

here are mine from SONY 100mm - 400mm F4.0 - F5.6 using SONY AR7 R3 photographed today at the Dutch Gap Conservation Area, Chester, Virginia. Note, I was about 3.0 metres from these Dragonfly, I originally brought the 100 mm - 400 mm to photograph BIF and larger animals only, however, could not find any only butterflies and dragon flies by the ton.

LOL. That one looks oddly similar to the one I just took two days ago. Slightly different color dragonfly is main difference.
