purchased the 100-400L II

just recently purchased this and have taken a few shots with it...very nice. MY concern is the foot. Now I will show my lack of knowledge but I would like to hear from those that use it. I want to mount this on a monopod but things don't match up accordingly. What do I need to get so my lens will mount on the monopod.

Would rather hear from you guys that use the lens instead of some sales person at this point.

have a 7dmark II and 5dmarkIII as cameras. Plan on using the 7dmark II with this lens and keeping the 70-200 f2.8 II or the 16-35f4 on the 5dmarkIII.

any advice would be greatly appreciated..

Please elaborate your issue. What do you mean by things don't match up? Is it the monopod screw size that is not matching?
Also instead of a separate thread, post your question on the already popular 100-400 thread. You will get more responses.

The foot has a socket. Monopods have a screw. Socket + screw = match.

Does the monopod require its own head? Heads attach with a 3/8” screw thread, then the head (or mounting plate on the head) provides a 1/4” screw thread to attach the camera or lens foot.

Which monopod is this that has 3/8" screw?

monopod screw is to big for the canon foot...


answered by own question, need to get a monopod that has the same diameter screw hole (thread) as the foot. duh!

Most mono pods allow you to reverse the screw on the top to change from 3/8 to 1/4 inch threads.

Which mono pod are you using?

The specs on that particular monopod say it has both 1/4” and 3/8” threads. As johnf3f said, the screw can probably be removed and reversed.

The first thing I do with any new lens that I buy is to mount a long speed plate onto the foot. . That way I can use it with either my gimbal heads or my ball head. . Once I get a lens, a speed plate gets screwed onto it and it never comes off, ever.

I switched from the crappy Canon OEM foot to a Kirk Industries aftermarket foot. Canon often drops the ball in small ways with some of their excellent products. The foot of the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II lens is just one of these drops.

1. The bottom edges of the foot are beveled rather than completely flat so it doesn't have a steady grip on any mounting surface.

2. The foot doesn't have Arca Compatible grooves.

The Kirk foot solves these problems.

BTW: I strongly suggest that anyone working with a tripod, especially when long lenses are involved, use a head with an Arca compatible clamp.

IMO - after dropping a small fortune on this lens, I should not have needed to spend another batch of bucks to convert the foot into a usable configuration... But, such is life when you are living with Canon gear!

I'm not a pro, but the other night I was using my 100-400L II to take some skyline pictures and when switching lenses I had to switch mounts and in the dark is it a PITA. I ordered the Kirk replacement foot yesterday just for the Arca mount capability.

I've never seen any tri or monopod that didn't use a 1/4-20 screw.

And I would disagree with the comment above about the Canon foot being 'crappy'. Mine surely isn't.

........but then I got the only Canon 6D that can focus on moving subjects too......so I must be a really lucky guy.
