I have a 50mm 1.4 that is broken - will not focus auto nor manual. Some time ago I attached the Cokin holder. I think the reason it's broken is because I tried to remove the holder. I tried to remove it again last night so I could have it repaired, and I still couldn't remove it. I applied a lot force and it won't budge.

Anyway, the canon repair site does not list this lens as a valid lens to repair, so I can't make a repair request online. I know this isn't a terribly expensive lens, but it has high sentimental value to me. Not sure what to do.

These guys have a good reputation for repairing gear no longer serviced by Canon:

Thank you Tomj!

I gave them a call and I'm going to send them things to fix. I'll update with my experience.

He says it's a common issue with this lens, having a weak barrel.

I just discovered my 50 1.4 has same problem. And I can't point to any abuse that caused it. Yes, it's a very common problem and a weak design. There are various self-repair videos if you do a Google search. I'll probably give it a try when I have time. I just bought a used Sigma 50 1.4(loving it), so I'm not in any rush. The Canon is worth maybe $200 used so really not worth it to me to pay $125 or whatever to repair. Are you sure Canon won't repair it? Seems strange since it is still sold new.

The canon repair request form forces you to choose from a list of products. The 1.4 is not listed.

I wouldn't bother normally, but it has some sentimental value and it does produce nice images, so I'll pay.

My advice: If/when you get it repaired, don't rest it on the front of the lens. Or if you do, use a lens shade. Note that when you focus there is a part on front of lens that moves slightly. Don't put any stress on this part.

Save your money. The AF mechanism of the 1.4 is uber fragile. Get a refurbished 50mm STM for $89.

Always use the Canon lens hood with this lens. It will protect the barrel (and thus the focus element). The 50 1.4 is a fairly fragile lens.
