I've had my website at SmugMug for 10 years.

In the beginning I liked SmugMug, but a few years ago they forced everyone to switch to the "new SmugMug" ..... which sucks for me. . With the new SmugMug, they changed the category / gallery / sub-gallery structure, so now my galleries are all messed up - they no longer have a sensible hierarchy to them. . I know that there are ways to get it set up the way I want it - the way it used to be. . But actually doing this is difficult.

I am not good at reading or following detailed instructions - I do much better when someone shows me how to do something, or when someone on the phone walks me through things step-by-step.

Most unfortunately, SmugMug does not have phone support. . That's right - I can't just call SmugMug and have an expert walk me through the process as I do each step. . They do have great email support, and are very responsive when it comes to responding to emails. . However, I am just not a person that does well following written instructions - it's like doing that requires my brain to work harder than it wants to, and so I just never end up getting around to doing it. . So, because of the lack of phone support, I have decided that I would like to leave SmugMug and set up a website somewhere else instead.

I watch Tony & Chelsea Northrup a lot, and they are sponsored by SquareSpace ...... so I thought that I would check out SquareSpace as a SmugMug replacement.

I got on the SquareSpace website and started to read about transferring domain names, and it got a little complicated - like, as I read I realized that if I was going to understand what they had written, my brain was going to have to go into some mode where it has to think real hard in order to understand, and I just don't do that "think hard" thing.

So I thought I'd just give SquareSpace a call and ask someone there to explain it to me. . I looked and looked for their support phone number, and couldn't find it. . I suspect that, just like SmugMug, they don't have phone support, and that if you have detailed questions you have to either correspond with them via email, or you have to read paragraphs of instructions and explanations ..... which I just don't do.

So, my question is, what website hosting service has good phone support where you can just call them up and ask them how to do things? . . Of course, I want to talk with someone who speaks English as a first language, so that I don't have any difficulty understanding them.

I did Google this, but came up with no valid results, so that is why I am turning to the forum membership as I seek information that can help me find what I am looking for.

GoDaddy has been very responsive over the past 18 years. Sometimes I ask stupid questions, they never made me feel stupid.

Thanks for the recommendation. . I've hd my domain name through GoDaddy for 10 years, but never knew that they offered websites. . I just called them and they assured me that yes, they do offer website services and yes, 24/7 phone support is part of the package.

What's more, the guy I spoke with spoke English very well and was easy to understand - much better than getting some ESL person that I can't understand.

Now I need to start their free trial website and see how to set things up ...... hope it's as easy as it looks like it's going to be.

Yeah. I always get someone I can communicate with.
Their website interface works very well. I have cpanel hosting and find it a nice mix of easy and functional.
If you have any other questions don’t hesitate to ask.

Thank you for the answer about Go Daddy hosting of websites. I am looking at it in greater detail.

Although I have searched 'website hosting' I am not satisfied with the results. I have seen some websites I admire, but wasn't able to find out who hosts. Hindsight is 20/20 as I realize that I could have emailed the website owner. Yeah, a duh moment! lol

So far I have looked at the following sites and have included a very brief summary about what I found.

GoDaddy - currently reviewing. Why don't they provide links that take potential new customers to websites (real or simulated) so I can experience? Frustrating.
SmugMug - The format is not favourable for what I want to as a photographer.
Square Space - not robust enough
Wordpress - had sites for teaching, but find it to difficult to customize
Thank you in advance.

Scott

Mine is hosted at godaddy.

I did a lookup of other sites hosted On the same IP as mine (see image). Checking those and mine might give you a sense of the responsiveness of that particular server. The usefulness of the sites is a whole other story that has nothing to do with the host.

Godaddy it's not bad, and it's cheap. But it's a shared webhosting, so your website will be sharing ip with other websites.

Hey Jeff,

What are the differences between godaddy and amazon? I assume speed it an obvious one, but do you get increased traffic, is it user friendly etc?

I live in Ottawa too. Do you belong to any of the photography clubs? I'm a member of (CCO) Camera Club of Ottawa, and a buddy of mine from the club is a car enthusiast. Perhaps we could meet over a coffee and discuss photography?

Cheers,

Scott

Hi Scott,

I find amazon more responsive for sure. The user interface is less new to the internet web server world friendly compared to godaddy, but they have some great out of the box Linux builds that get you up and running in a few minutes (I used Wordpress) Amazon is much cheaper. You won’t get any more website traffic with one web hosting provider over another, but a fast site won’t have as many people abandoning your page if it takes forever to load.

Shooting you a forum PM on the other stuff :-)

GoDaddy calls me regularly to ask how I'm doing, so I figure they must have decent phone support.

Does Amazon provide templates like WordPress and Zenfolio does, or do you have to build your website from scratch?
