I am really new to this. When using studio lighting with two kids sitting next to each other or on each other's lap, what type of ratio is usually used 1:1? Would you have one kid lit nicely and the other a bit in shadow?

Thanks.

I would want each lit to the same level.

This. And both in focus so be sure to stop down enough.

What lights do you have? A simple setup would be one light high, camera right, but not too far off axis. Back it up far enough that falloff doesn't leave the kid in back underexposed. If you have a second light for fill on the opposite side, set it to one stop less than the key (2:1) and adjust to taste.
