Is it normal for there to be a slight amount of play of the focus ring with this lens?
I'm not referring to the rotation of the ring but, side to side and up and down movement.

I noticed this today as I was holding the lens differently than what I normally do.

Normally I have the lens collar rotated so that the foot is underneath the lens and the foot would be resting in my hand but today, I rotated the collar so that the foot was above the lens.
When I placed the lens in the palm of my hand, I felt a slight movement of the focus ring and heard a noise.

The movement wasn't due to me accidentally rotating the ring, and I know that because if I place my thumb on one side of the ring and a finger on the other side and alternate pressure between the thumb and finger, the ring will move very slightly from side to side, not in a rotating manner.
The ring will move slightly up and down if I put my thumb and finger at the top and bottom of the ring and apply pressure.

I'm guessing the noise must be due to the ring hitting against the body of the lens.
Under normal circumstances, I probably wouldn't hear the noise but, I was at a very quiet location today.

Neither of these two issues happen with the zoom ring.

As far as I can tell, there aren't any focusing issues with the lens and the focus ring rotates smoothly. Almost too smoothly at times.

The lens is close to a year old and has never been dropped.

I have been shooting foot up since getting the lens and never experienced that.

I've done a search since my earlier post to see if other users of this lens have noticed the focus ring being a bit loose and I found this on DPREVIEW.

I wonder if this is another one of those quality control issues like the one where some people have lens creep with a particular lens and others don't with the same lens.

Well, I checked mine. The focus ring does rock from side to side when held between thumb and a finger. There is, what I will call a rattling noise when you rock it. FWIW my 70-300L does the same and produces the same kind of sound. By side to side I mean sideways in the groove the ring is in and not across the diameter of the lens.

So, it appears this is normal. There also seems to be a wide range of tension? in the operating range of the zoom tension ring. Mine needs to be turned up to about 3/4 to stop lens creep but that is another topic. All within normal parameters I hope.
